In the history of the nation, the government, according to President Nana Akufo-Addo, is closer to the people than it has ever been.
In 1988, when there were just 110 District Assemblies, the decentralization changes had advanced in several areas, according to him.
Dr. Eric Oduro Osae spoke on President Akufo-Addo’s behalf at his inaugural speech in Hohoe.
He said that fresh concepts and chances to enhance the District Assembly’s legislative, executive, and deliberative roles were anticipated while the Assembly’s membership was being filled.
The Assembly Members’ mandate, according to President Akufo-Addo, is to deliberate, plan, mobilize resources, and make decisions including bylaws to guarantee that their district is transformed into the Ghana that everyone desires.
To support the work of the Assembly, he urged the Members to form solid alliances and work together with the local structures, especially the unit committees, traditional authorities, town, zonal, and area councils, as well as other recognizable groupings.
“It is through these partnerships and collaborations that the ideals of local governance are optimized for the benefit of the people.”
He said that the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD) was working to improve the mobilization of Internally Generated Funds (IGFs) of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies at the time the Assembly was being inaugurated.
To mobilize the necessary resources for the development of their regions, President Akufo-Addo urged the Members to collaborate closely with one another.
According to him, the government was eager to increase Members’ ability to exercise local leadership.
According to President Akufo-Addo, effective administration requires citizens to actively engage in the process of development.
He pleaded with the Assembly to provide venues for town hall meetings, community durbars, and the use of other digitalized instruments for public involvement to improve the rapport between the people and their representatives.
To steer the district development agenda and enhance the quality of the people’s livelihoods and well-being, President Akufo-Addo reminded the Members of what their voters expected of them: selflessness, loyalty to duty, highly accountable stewardship, and the ability to express the demands of the people.
