The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, has issued a warning: if the salaries of approximately 404 teachers are not released by today, Friday, February 16, 2024, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) will be held responsible for any actions taken by teacher unions starting next week.
On February 14, the OSP was given a 72-hour ultimatum by GNAT, NAGRAT, and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers to release the teachers’ salaries or face their wrath.
1310 teachers’ salaries are allegedly unpaid by the OSP. 404 teachers still haven’t received their pay, even though 906 teachers’ salaries have been disclosed. The Office says it is looking into if there are any ghost names on the government payroll.
During a Thursday Eyewitness News on Citi FM interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Musah maintained that the OSP lacked the right to deny teachers their salaries.
He went on to say that the OSP would be in charge of any subsequent actions if the remaining salaries were not disclosed.
“We are reminding the OSP to take the necessary action by directing the four banks to release the teachers’ funds by Friday at the latest. The OSP should go deal with the head of the agency if they find any evidence of misconduct on the part of any teachers. The Director-General is that person. However, it is not the OSP’s place to approach the bank and request that they not be paid. That specific right is not granted by law to the OSP, and we will not tolerate it starting on Monday.
“Whatever occurs starting next week, the OSP should take the blame and they should have faith in us.” We’ll step up to the plate and provide…If these funds are not paid by tomorrow at the latest, the OSP should bear full responsibility starting next week, he said.
