Gladys Knight, the legendary entertainer and owner of Riccino Optical, is expressing frustration that President Biden has not responded to her repeated requests for a meeting to discuss providing COVID-related products to the public. In a letter sent to the President in June, Knight outlined her company’s ability to provide antigen tests, anti-fog goggles, and face shields. Despite her efforts, she says she has been ignored.
Knight’s anger was compounded by news reports of a meeting between President Biden and K-pop group BTS. In her letter, she asked, “Are the problems associated with African Americans not equal to those of other races? Why do we have to be last?”
She went on to express her disappointment in not having a sit-down with President Biden, even though she recently received the National Medal of Arts at the White House. Knight’s frustration highlights the challenges African American-owned businesses face in securing government contracts and the need for more equitable access to opportunities.
