Media outlets are being advised by Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), to refrain from showcasing Mavis Hawa Koomson, MP for Awutu Senya, on their platforms until the individuals responsible for the assault on David Kobina, host of Cape FM’s morning show, have been apprehended.
On January 4, David Kobina was attacked by attackers who claimed to be Hawa Koomson’s supporters during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary vetting in the Central Region.
This happened after the attackers claimed he was mistaken for another journalist who had said offensive things about Hawa Koomson on UTV.
The GJA president claims that although there hasn’t been any evidence against the MP thus far, there are worries about those who are close to her.
“We believe there are thugs, unreasonable and evil-minded people around the MP who pose a serious threat to the life of journalists and other media practitioners.
“We have nothing against the MP but we are scared of the people around her. All media practitioners should stay away from Mavis Hawa Koomson,” he added.
According to Mr. Dwumfour, the national and regional NPP leaderships have to endeavor to locate and suitably penalize the perpetrators of David Kobina’s assault.
In addition, he urged the Ghana Police Service to look into and apprehend the assaulters as soon as possible.
He also called for the name and punishment of the policeman who invited the journalist and watched helplessly while the host of the morning show was attacked.
On Saturday, January 27, Mr. Dwumfour asked NPP officials and supporters across the country to make sure that reporters covering the party’s parliamentary primaries are secure.
