Former Great Olympics player, Korley Laryea, has proposed an interesting solution to the struggling Ghana Premier League – giving local players the opportunity to play for the Black Stars in order to attract more fans to the stadia.
For the past three seasons, the local league has been facing a decline in attendance, with many attributing it to a decrease in the quality of the games. However, Laryea believes that the solution lies in showcasing local talent on the national stage.
According to Laryea, having Ghana Premier League players represent the Black Stars will not only boost the quality of the league but also draw more supporters to the matches. He stated, “Names also add in football. When Hearts are playing Kotoko and have about two players in the national team, it will bring the crowd to come and watch the match.”
Laryea emphasized the importance of involving local players in the national team, highlighting that it would incentivize fans to attend matches and create a more vibrant atmosphere in the stadiums. He expressed his confidence in the talent of local players and urged for their inclusion in the national team as a means to revive interest in the Ghana Premier League.
As the league continues to struggle with declining attendance, Laryea’s suggestion offers a fresh perspective on how to reinvigorate the local football scene. With the potential to attract more fans and elevate the profile of Ghanaian football, his proposal may just be the key to revitalizing the sport at the domestic level.
