The late Gita is the daughter of Biju Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik. She has a brother who has been Naveen Patnaik, a politician who has been serving as the chief minister of Odisha since 2000. Her father Biju Patnaik was an Indian independence activist and a chief minister in post-independence Odisha, then known as Orissa.
She was a widow who had been married once at the time of her death. She was married to Sonny Mehta, former head of the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house, in 1965. The couple had a son, Aditya Singh Mehta. Her husband predeceased her in 2019.
