Gillian MacLaren Jacobs is the daughter of Martina Magenau, an employee of Carnegie Mellon University, and investment banker William F. Jacobs Jr. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and her mother raised her in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
Her grandfather served as president and CEO of the Erie Brewing Company, which was not to be confused with the subsequent brewery with the same name until it was sold in 1978. She began studying acting when she was four years old, and as a child, she took weekend acting classes at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.
She was cast as Titania in the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream because she was a consistent participant in the Public’s Shakespeare Monologue Contest. She moved to New York City in 2000 to attend the Juilliard School, where she received a BFA in 2004. She graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 2000.
