Trophy wives take on a whole new meaning now.
The trophy wives of choice for the dons of warring drug cartels in Mexico and Colombia are now beauty queens.
Beauty queens have become the greatest prize for drug traffickers in some of the most violent parts of the Americas.
Colombia pioneered the approach in the 1970s. Miss Colombia 1974, Martha Lucia Echeverry, was the mistress of Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, the murderous Cali cartel’s leader. Echeverry is thought to be the first ‘narco lady.’
In 1974, Echeverry, representing the Valle del Cauca district, won Colombia’s National Beauty Queen event.
However, she would not meet Miguel Rodrguez Orejuela, the powerful Cali Cartel’s leader, until 1980.
According to Semana, the two met when Echeverry began working in public relations for Cali’s professional soccer team, which Rodrguez Orejuela owned at the time.
Only until Rodrguez Orejuela was extradited to the United States in 2005 did their relationship come to an end.
