Political Scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has emphasized the importance of the Electoral Commission (EC) getting all processes right for this year’s election to build trust and confidence in the commission’s ability to deliver credible polls.
During an appearance on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, Dr. Asah-Asante stated that Ghanaians are not seeking apologies but rather a foolproof election. He stressed the significance of accurate processes and figures to ensure a transparent and reliable electoral process.
His comments come in response to the errors the EC corrected in the daily registration figures during the limited voter registration exercise. Initially, the Commission reported 143,014 eligible voters registered by the end of day four. However, discrepancies were identified, particularly in the Upper East region, leading to a subsequent statement acknowledging the errors.
The EC emphasized its commitment to transparency and accuracy in the voter registration process, addressing mistakes made in the total registration figures to provide the public with reliable information. The commission aims to achieve its registration target by the end of the exercise to ensure a comprehensive and accurate voter register for the upcoming polls.
Despite facing challenges, the EC remains dedicated to a credible voter register for the December 7 elections. Dr. Asah-Asante’s call for a meticulous electoral process underscores the importance of upholding integrity in the democratic process.
