On Friday, a group from the Ghanaian community in Udine, Italy, made a courtesy call to Alfredo D’Agostino, the Commissioner of Police, to talk about immigrant welfare.
Kofi Bonsu, the guy who organized Udine’s first-ever protest and changed the story of countless immigrants, served as the team’s leader.
In December 2023, Mr. Bonsu organized a massive protest and blasted the government for not doing more to help people’s lives.
Thus, the purpose of the meeting with Mr. Alfredo was to explore ways to address and resolve problems that immigrants encounter, such cruel treatment, protracted wait times for permit renewals, and lengthy lines outside the police station during bad weather, among other things.
The possibility of extending the hospital card (tesserae sanitaria) during the waiting period while a resident’s paperwork is being renewed was also addressed.
The commissioner promised that measures to improve the situation of immigrants in Udine are being taken.
Mr. Alfredo stated that it is not the officers’ purpose to penalize immigrants when it comes to document renewal. He promised to contact all pertinent authorities in order to request redress.
The commissioner was thanked by Kofi Bonsu and his group for his cordial greeting, assurance, and willingness to work with them to achieve favorable circumstances.
He also conveyed gratitude to the Ghanaian community for their widespread involvement in the demonstration against cruel treatment, which he believes is having an impact.
