Ghanaian artist Joseph Awuah-Darko is currently seeking financial assistance to cover legal fees for a potential legal action against renowned U.S. artist Kehinde Wiley.
The projected legal fees for this matter amount to $200,000. Awuah-Darko made a revelation on Instagram in March, disclosing that he had been a victim of sexual assault in the past without disclosing the identity of the perpetrator.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Awuah-Darko expressed his determination to seek justice and not remain silent on the issue. However, he highlighted the significant financial burden associated with pursuing legal action, hence his appeal for financial support from the public.
The Ghanaian artist emphasized his commitment to bringing the matter to light, stating, “It should never happen to anybody. I have decided I will not be silent and I am willing to see it through to justice.” He also shared ways for individuals to contribute towards the legal fees, with the target set at $200,000.
Awuah-Darko further mentioned in a video on his Instagram page that he is aware his life will change after revealing this information, but he believes it is time to speak out.
The artist had accused Kehinde Wiley of sexually assaulting him on two occasions in June 2021. According to Awuah-Darko, the incidents occurred during a dinner event organized by the Ghana Creative Art Council at the Noldor Artist Residency. He alleged that Wiley had groped his buttocks while they were heading upstairs to the bathroom with another guest.
In response to the accusations, Kehinde Wiley denied the sexual assault allegations, stating that he had a consensual relationship with Awuah-Darko three years ago. He described the claims as false and asserted his innocence, noting that the allegations were an affront to all victims of sexual abuse. Wiley requested privacy as he works to clear his name, pointing out that there is evidence supporting his side of the story.
