On Monday, February 19, 2024, in Accra, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will unveil yet another historic digital project for the transportation industry.
Known as Tap and Go, it’s a digital card that comes pre-loaded with cash that can be used, much like the UK’s Oyster Card, to pay for transportation costs by tapping the card on a fixed machine on the bus.
To guarantee use, Ghana’s Tap and Go card will also incorporate extra features from both the virtual and physical versions.
When using the virtual card, users can download the Tap and Go app on their phones and choose not to use the card by selecting the virtual card option, which allows them to make payments using their phones.
As part of the government’s digitalization efforts to formalize the economy and advance a cashless society, Vice President Bawumia led the initiative.
With the help of a well-tested and organized technology, the Tap and Go digital project is anticipated to formalize the unofficial transportation industry. This will be extremely advantageous for drivers, transport operators, and the general public.
The Tap and Go are open to private transport owners as well as state-owned transportation providers like STC and Metro Mass Transit, and it is anticipated that they will begin operations soon.
