After 24 matches, the Black Stars finished 18th in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
After hosting the tournament and winning it with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the championship match, Ivory Coast emerged victorious and claimed their third AFCON title.
In the tournament, Nigeria, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo took second, third, and fourth place, respectively. With a penalty-filled victory over Congo, South Africa finished with their best result since 2000.
Four-time AFCON champion Ghana’s Black Stars had a difficult campaign and were eliminated from the competition in the first round without a victory. The team managed 2-2 draws with Egypt and Mozambique but lost 1-2 to Cape Verde. Regretfully, their performance resulted in their early withdrawal from the competition.
Ghana managed to score five goals during the competition, but they also gave up six, including two pivotal goals in extra time against Mozambique, which prevented them from moving on to the next round.
The Black Stars have now lost the AFCON in the first round for two straight editions, underscoring the necessity of introspection and preparation for the next tournament.
The Black Stars will be looking to rebound in upcoming challenges following a disastrous show.
