Gerda Weissmann Klein, the Polish-American writer cum human rights activist who survived the Holocaust has passed away on April 3, 2022.
The teen Holocaust survivor and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and subject of a 1995 Oscar-and-Emmy winning film, died at 97.
Gerda Weissmann’s autobiographical account of the Holocaust, All but My Life, was adapted for the 1995 short film, “One Survivor Remembers”, which received an Academy Award and an Emmy Award, and was selected for the National Film Registry.
Gerda Weissmann, was born on May 8, 1924, in Bielsko, now bielsko-Biala, Poland. Her father, Julius Weissmann was a fur manufacturing executive and her mother Helene Weissmann was a housewife.
Gerda Weissmann attended Notre Dame Gymnasium in Bielsko until, her country, Poland was invaded by Germany in 1939.
She lost her parents and older brother during the Holocaust.
Gerda Weissmann was 15-year-old when the Germans invaded their home on September 3, 1939.

Her father was sent to a death camp where he was murdered in April 1942 and got separated from her mother in June 1942.

On October 18, 1939, her older brother, Arthur who was 19-year-old as at that time complied with the German order and joined the military.

According to Weissmann Klein’s account, her life was spared when the head of the local Jewish Council Judenrat, Moshe Merin, said she was too young to die.

Weissmann Klein was in several camps throughout the war and was part of  4000 women who took part in the death march.

She authored several memoirs and children’s stories, including “The Windsor Caper (2013)”, a weekly serial in The Buffalo News during the 1980s, about two American girls who have a night-time adventure in Windsor Castle, England, which she described as her only work that is “not rooted in pain”.
