George Santos claimed that his maternal grandparents were Jewish Ukrainians who had emigrated to Belgium and then Brazil during World War II in order to avoid the Holocaust, but genealogical records and other proof reveal that Santos’ ancestors have been living in Brazil for at least three generations and have no connection to either Ukraine, Jewish heritage, or Holocaust survivors.
George Santos, the son of immigrants, grew up in a basement apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens. In pursuit of the American dream, both his mother and father entered the country legally. There, they raised their children by instilling in them the values of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
