Russell joined Williams in 2019 after winning the Formula 2 title, making his debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, though he stood in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
Russell finished third in his maiden Formula One race with Williams at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2021.
He’s also a member of Mercedes’ Young Drivers program. Russell left Williams in 2022 to join Mercedes.
Russell was born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, to father Steve and mother Alison, the youngest of two siblings: Cara, his younger sister, and Benjy, his older brother.
Russell began karting at the age of seven, after spending a lot of time around karting tracks and his brother Benjy, who was also a talented kart driver.
Russell attended Wisbech Grammar School while growing up in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, before moving to Milton Keynes at the age of 18 to be closer to his racing teams.
