According to Mary Lou Falcone, Sir Georg’s press representative in New York, he had a heart attack on Tuesday while vacationing with his wife Valerie and daughter Claudia. Sir Georg passed away quietly in his sleep last night.
Over the course of a career spanning more than six decades, he served as music director for a number of opera organizations, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Opera (Munich), the Frankfurt Opera, the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, and others. His recording career includes more than 250 recordings, including 45 whole opera sets, both as a conductor and as a solo singer.
He kept working till the very end when he suddenly passed away while sleeping. He received numerous national and international awards throughout his life, including a record-breaking 31 Grammys, for his work. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him as well to recognize his outstanding contribution to music.
