He did not die of suicide as of 2022.

Moeller was the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines from 1990 to 1994, succeeding legendary coach Bo Schembechler.

Prior to that, Moeller worked for Schembechler as a defensive ends coach, defensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, defensive coordinator (again), and offensive coordinator, including a three-year spell as the Illinois head coach from 1977 to 1979.

Moeller began his coaching career under Schembechler at Miami (OH), but he also had the unique honor of having competed as a linebacker at opponent Ohio State, where he was a co-captain and three-year letter bearer. Moeller worked as the tight ends coach for two years.

During his five years as head coach in Ann Arbor, Moeller compiled a 44-13-3 record, winning the Big Ten three times.

Andy Moeller, his son, followed in his father’s footsteps, first playing at Michigan and then coaching the Wolverines as a position coach from 2000 to 2007.
