Tatsumi’s death comes after that of Kane Tanaka, who until last year, at the age of 119, was officially acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the oldest person in the world (a record that will expire in April 2022).

At the age of 116, Fusa Tatsumi became the oldest living person in Japan and the 27th person in history to reach that amazing milestone. Only seven other Japanese people have accomplished this achievement.

Tatsumi enjoyed gardening, and after finishing elementary school, she studied flower arrangement and the Japanese tea ceremony. She expressed her passion of gardening until she moved into a nursing home, even at the age of 106.
