Freddie Mercury was a British musician and composer who rose to international recognition as the lead singer of the rock band Queen.

He was born in Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946.

He was recognized as one of the greatest rock singers of all time, known for his flamboyant stage demeanor and four-octave vocal range. Queen’s visual orientation was shaped by Mercury’s theatrical demeanor, which broke rock singer norms.

In the early 1970s, Mercury had a long-term relationship with Mary Austin, whom he met through guitarist Brian May.

Austin, who was born in London’s Fulham district, met Mercury when she was 19 and he was 24, a year before Queen was established.

He resided with Austin in West Kensington, London, for some years. By the mid-1970s, he had begun an affair with Elektra Records executive David Minns.

According to the Encyclopedia of Dead Rock Stars, Austin’s remains may have been thrown on the shores of Lake Geneva, a spot Freddie was “very fond of and one where his statue was soon to be unveiled.”

However, public attention to a plaque in Kensal Green Cemetery bearing Freddie’s birth name in 2013 reinforced conjecture that Austin didn’t go far to bury his bones.
