Valentine attended Tennessee State University before joining the Baltimore Orioles farm system in 1956. During his stay with the Baltimore Orioles, he played 12 games in the outfield and batted 316 with two multi-hit games.
He played only 26 games for the Orioles in 1962 before being sent back to the minors and then sold to the Senators in 1963. For the rest of the season, he batted 268 as a pinch hitter and backup outfielder.
