Franz Beckenbauer’s death was a peaceful one according to his family report. “It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family,” the family said in a statement. “We ask that we be allowed to grieve in peace and spared any questions.”

Franz Beckenbauer was born in the post-World War 2 ruins of Munich, the second son of postal worker Franz Beckenbauer Sr. and his wife Antonie Hupfauf. He grew up in the working-class district of Giesing and, despite his father’s cynicism about the game, started playing football at the age of nine with the youth team of SC Munich ’06 in 1954.
Franz Beckenbauer was married three times and had five children, one of whom, Stephan, was a professional footballer, who died after a long illness on July 31, 2015, at the age of 46.
