The former publisher of The Gadsden Times, Frank Helderman Jr. has passed away at 82 on Thursday, March 31, 2022, in Atlanta.

Frank Helderman Jr. was the publisher of The Gadsden Times from 1985 to 1994.

Frank Helderman Jr hails from Spartanburg, South Carolina, and later migrated to Gadsden in 1952 where he was enrolled in Disque Junior High School in seventh grade.

His father, Frank Helderman Sr. was the publisher of The Times.

In 1985, Frank Helderman Jr. was named The Times’ publisher. He succeeded his father, Frank Helderman Sr. after the newspaper was purchased by the New York Times Co.

He worked there until 1994 when he took over as publisher of another New York Times paper, the TimesDaily in Florence.

Helderman received the Alabama Council of the Arts’ 1989 Governor’s Award for his efforts to promote the arts and later served on the council.

He served two terms as president of the Alabama Press Association and on the board of the Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind.

Helderman graduated B.S. in business with a minor in journalism from the University of Alabama.
