In the fifth inning of Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero hurt his ankle.
Randy Arozarena of the Rays’ outfield hit a long fly ball deep into left field, and Cordero made a last-ditch attempt to leap and capture it.
However, Cordero adopted a strange stance and looked to be attempting to support himself against the wall with his hands and foot. Cordero bounced off the wall as the ball did, before falling to the ground in a heap.
The ball was returned to the infield by Kiké Hernandez after he rushed over to get it.
Cordero remained seated and didn’t seem to be able to put any weight on his ankle. He was carried from the field and was identified as having an ankle injury.
Before the injury, Franchy Cordero had been one of the most consistent players in Red Sox this season.
