The Ghana Police Service has detained four pupils from Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) in Legon, as well as two adults, for faking the kidnapping of one of the kids.
According to a police statement made on Friday, April 5, 2024, early investigations revealed that the kidnapping was a ploy by the gang to allow one of the students to extort money from his parents to support his international journey.
“The Ghana Police Service, via an intelligence-led operation and investigation, detained six (6) people, including four (4) minors, all of whom are pupils at Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, Accra, for fabricating a kidnapping incident. The two (2) adults among the six (6) are Isaac Kissi Adjei, also known as Kofi Black, and Courage Teiko, also known as Timmy.
“Preliminary investigations found that one of the juveniles collaborated with the others to simulate the kidnapping in order to collect money from his parents so that he could travel overseas. According to the police statement, they requested a ransom of GH₵340,000.00 from the parents of the suspected victim.
The adolescents and their adult accomplices successfully collected GH₵20,000 from the total ransom sought prior to their arrest, according to authorities.
“The investigation revealed that the juveniles, along with the two others, succeeded in collecting an amount of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢20,000.00) of the total ransom demanded.”
The family negotiated a ransom of GH₵20,000 after being threatened with harvesting their son’s organs and receiving proof of abuse from his kidnappers.
The family provided money by cellphone, but the kidnappers demanded an additional GH₵300,000 cedis to rescue the youngster.
