Former ABC news anchor, Tanya Spencer, tragically passed away at the age of 53 after a tough battle with cancer. Known as Tanya Sumner during her time on television, Spencer served on the Whitestown Town Council in District Three.
Spencer’s journey with cancer began when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form that originated in her colon. Despite undergoing various treatments, including chemotherapy, the cancer continued to spread. She eventually lost her battle with the disease on May 24, at her home.
Throughout her 20-year career in broadcast journalism, half of which she spent at WRTV, Spencer was a familiar face to the residents of Indianapolis. She was not only dedicated to her work but also valued her privacy.
In a heartfelt Facebook post shared with her friends, Spencer reflected on the importance of time and good health as the only true commodities in life. She was a married mother to a teenager and faced one of her biggest challenges when she underwent emergency surgery in 2022, leading to the discovery of her colon cancer.
Spencer, who had a rare genetic mutation, advocated for regular colonoscopies as a way to detect cancer early. She emphasized the importance of screenings starting at age 45, rather than the previously recommended age of 50.
Throughout her battle with cancer, Spencer remained positive and urged others to prioritize their health. Her advocacy and courage in the face of adversity will be remembered by all who knew her.
