Fiona Apple is an American singer-songwriter who was born on September 13, 1977. Between 1996 and 2020, she put out five albums, all of which debuted in the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard 200 list. Three Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and a Billboard Music Award are just a few of the many honors and nominations that Apple has garnered.

Apple, the youngest child of actor Brandon Maggart, was born in New York City and reared sporadically between her mother’s and father’s homes there and in Los Angeles. She started writing her own songs when she was eight years old after receiving classical piano training as a young child. Her 1996 debut album, Tidal, which featured songs she wrote while still in her teen years, won a Grammy.

On September 13, 1977, in New York City, Fiona Apple was born to singer Diane McAfee and actor Brandon Maggart, who had met while auditioning for the Broadway production of Applause. Apple has Melungeon ancestry through her Tennessee-born father. Dancer Millicent Green and big band performer Johnny McAfee were her maternal grandparents. Garett Maggart, an actor, is the half-brother of Amber Maggart, whose sister performs cabaret under the name Maude Maggart. Apple was raised in Harlem’s Morningside Gardens by her mother, sister, and with the help of her father during the summers in nearby Los Angeles. She was a student at St. Hugh’s and St. Hilda’s School.
