Abena Benewaa Fosu, the Executive Director of Yebetumi, a women’s rights organization, has raised concerns about the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence in Ghana. In a recent interview on TV3’s New Day, Abena Benewaa called for a ban on Obour’s 2004 hit song ‘Konkontiba’, citing its promotion of pedophilia and sexual violence against women, especially young girls.
Specifically, Abena Benewaa pointed out a particular verse in the song which she interpreted as encouraging grown men to groom young girls, thereby promoting pedophilia. She believes that such lyrics contribute to the normalization of sexual violence in society and called for action to be taken against similar songs in the music industry.
Abena Benewaa’s advocacy for the banning of ‘Konkontiba’ is part of her larger efforts to combat gender-based violence in Ghana. She emphasized the need for society to reject and address songs that perpetuate harmful behaviors towards women and girls.
This call to action highlights the importance of holding artists and the entertainment industry accountable for the messages they promote through their music.
