The Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed the use of fake Ghana Card numbers during the voter registration process at the Pusiga District Registration Centre on May 13, 2024.
Approximately 17 individuals were found to have registered with counterfeit Ghana Card numbers during the exercise, prompting swift action from the EC. The Registration Officer in charge of the center was immediately dismissed, and later arrested by law enforcement officials following a report filed with the Police.
In a statement released on Monday, May 20, the EC elaborated on the fraudulent registrations, attributing them to the negligence of the Registration Officer. The investigation uncovered that the officer failed to properly verify the authenticity of the Ghana Cards presented by the applicants. Instead, the officer accepted the fake numbers provided by Party Agents accompanying the 17 individuals.
The EC expressed deep concern over the breach of integrity in the voter registration process and assured the public of its dedication to upholding the exercise’s integrity. The statement reiterated that the Ghana Card numbers used were fake, and the Registration Officer was complicit in his failure to inspect the cards physically.
The Registration Officer was subsequently dismissed, and the 17 applicants were registered through the Guarantor System. The Police have granted the officer a bail while continuing their investigations into the matter.
The EC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the voter registration process remains resolute, despite the fraudulent activities uncovered at the Pusiga District Registration Centre.
