Ewa Podleś is well known for having a vocal range that spans more than three octaves. Podleś was born in Warsaw on April 26, 1952. At the Warsaw Academy of Music, she started studying under Alina Bolechowska. In 1975, she made her stage debut as Rosina in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.
On February 14, 1984, she made her stage debut at the Metropolitan Opera (Met) in New York City, playing the title role of Handel’s Rinaldo. She did, however, play a relatively small number of shows that year (two of which took place at the Met’s headquarters), and she was conspicuously absent from the Met for over 24 years. She performed frequently in opera houses across Europe and America.
She appeared on DVD in Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, which was staged at Milan’s La Scala in 1996, playing the role of the Marquise de Berkenfeld. She debuted at the Metropolitan Opera on September 24, 2008, in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, as La Cieca.
