Two Decades After its Broadway Debut, Wicked Musical Set for Film Adaptation
The highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked has been given the green light after two decades since its debut. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the movie will be a two-part prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
The star-studded cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Michelle Yeoh in lead roles. The release dates for the movies have also been confirmed, with Wicked hitting theaters worldwide on November 27, 2024, followed by Wicked: Part Two on November 26, 2025.
Initially greenlit in May 2017, the project faced delays in development, leading to its long-awaited release in 2024. Director Jon M. Chu took to social media to express the decision to split the film into two parts, to ensure the story of Wicked can be told as intended without compromise.
The cast is filled with talented actors, including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, among others. The process of casting and production was described as a collaborative effort to bring the world of Oz to life in a new and immersive way.
The plot of Wicked delves into the untold story of the friendship between Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland, who would later become known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, respectively. The double feature promises to explore their lives and the events that shaped them before they assumed their well-known titles.
Fans of the musical can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved story, brought to life by a talented cast and visionary director. Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks as the release dates approach.
