For the 2022–23 Europa League, Manchester United was placed in Group E together with Real Sociedad, Sheriff Tiraspol, and Omonia.
The Red Devils’ sixth-place Premier League performance allowed them to automatically qualify for the Europa League group stage this year.
The competition’s last-16 round will include the winners of each of the eight groups, while the runners-up in each division will face the eight teams that placed third in the Champions League groups.
Man United has never faced opposition from Cyprus or Moldova, but will do so this season in the Europa League against Sheriff Tiraspol and Omonia, respectively.
In the playoff round, Sheriff defeated Pyunik after the two sides played to back-to-back scoreless draws in the first two legs. The Moldovan team ultimately prevailed in a penalty shootout.
In the meantime, Omonia, under by former Celtic head coach Neil Lennon, defeated Gent 4-0 on the road to go to the group stage.
Real Sociedad, who placed sixth in La Liga last year, will also be a challenge for Erik ten Hag’s club, which has advanced directly to the competition’s group stage.
