American gospel singer, songwriter, and matriarch of the American R&B/soul vocal group DeBarge Etterlene Louise Rodriguez has passed away at the age of 88. She died on Friday, February 16, 2024.

Etterlene DeBarge was born Etterlene Abney on October 13, 1935, in Royal Oak, Michigan, as one of twelve children and had a twin sister. When she was a child, her family moved to the Brewster-Douglass housing projects, located on Detroit’s Lower East Side.
In May 2014, she authored Other Side Of The Pain as the synopsis reads: ‘Mother of famed 80’s musical recording group DeBarge shares the untold story of fame, tragedy, and perseverance.’
