Dr. Hi-kyung Chae and Mrs. Inja Chae raised Chae. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, and moved to Seoul, South Korea, when she was five years old.
She earned a B.A. in French Literature from Korea University. She returned to the United States after graduating. Chae studied theater studies at the University of Michigan and acting at the Yale School of Drama.
Chae was invited to present “WIBLDD: What If Bruce Lee Didn’t Die?” at TEDxPHX in 2015. This one-of-a-kind talk and performance highlight Asian American representation (or lack thereof) in the media and arts through an illuminating conversation with Master Bruce Lee, 75. The San Diego Theater Critic Circle nominated Chae for “Extraordinary Chambers” (Play), “Outstanding Dramatic Production,” and “Outstanding Ensemble” in 2014.
New York Governor David Paterson presented Chae with the 2010 APA Heritage Trailblazer Award 2010. She also received the 2010 University of Michigan Emerging Artist Alumni Award, as well as the King/Chavez/Parks Visiting Professorship and Emerging Artist Award, that year.
