The American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress Erica Abi Wright (born February 26, 1971) is better known by her stage name, Erykah Badu. With influences from R&B, soul, and hip-hop, Badu gained notoriety in the late 1990s when her debut album, Baduizm (1997), put her at the forefront of the neo soul trend and earned her the title “Queen of Neo Soul” from music reviewers.

By the time she was 14 years old, Badu started performing for a local radio station as a freestyler alongside Roy Hargrove and other artists. She had made the decision to change the spelling of her first name from Erica to Erykah when she was younger because she felt that her original name was a “slave name.” “Kah” refers to one’s inner self. She chose the last name “Badu” because it is the sound of her favorite jazz scat, and since it is also the name of the 10th-born child among the Akan people of Ghana.

Who are Erykah Badu’s siblings?

She’s got a brother (Eevin Wright) and a sister (Nayrok Wright).

Following a breakup with their father, William Wright Jr., their mother raised all three of them by herself; her (Erykah), her sister, and her brother Eevin.
