Former professional football coach Ernie Zampese was an American.
In 1953, while playing for Santa Barbara High School, he was named the CIF Player of the Year. He then played halfback for the USC Trojans in 1955 and 1956.
He coached college football at Allan Hancock Junior College, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and San Diego State University between 1962 and 1975.
He worked for numerous NFL clubs between 1976 and 1999 as an offensive coordinator, scout, assistant head coach, and assistant coach. During the Air Coryell era, he achieved his greatest fame as the San Diego Chargers’ offensive coordinator and associate head coach.
