Emory Andrew Tate Jr. (December 27, 1958 – October 17, 2015) was a chess player from the United States. The first black grandmaster, Maurice Ashley, described Tate as “absolutely a trailblazer for African-American chess.”

Tate was born in Chicago, the son of prominent attorney Emory Andrew Tate Sr.

Emory Tate is also a world chess champion. He had a FIDE rating of 2413 and a USCF rating of 2499 at his peak.

His father joined the Air Force in the 1980s, where he honed his chess skills. Later, in October 2006, his father was ranked as the 72nd best player in the United States.

He was a sergeant in the United States Air Force, where his language skills were invaluable.
