Emma Thompson, full name Dame Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959 in London, England) is an English actress and screenwriter who is known for her sophisticated and humorous performances as well as her award-winning writings.

Emma Thompson, the daughter of performers Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law, was raised in a theatrical family where she developed an affinity for the ludicrous. She was a member of the comic ensemble Footlights while studying English literature at the University of Cambridge.
