In order to guarantee that political parties are able to track the contributions made to and expenses incurred by their candidates in open elections, the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has requested that the Electoral Commission implement the necessary legislative changes.

According to GACC, doing so would safeguard the integrity of the electoral process from outside influences and advance transparency in campaign finance.

This was stated in a statement released by the GACC on Wednesday, February 7, following a workshop in Accra, Ghana, aimed at enhancing journalistic capacity.

“In order to ensure comprehensive accountability with regards to the financing of electoral campaigns, the Electoral Commission must undertake the necessary legal reforms to ensure that political parties capture donations to candidates and expenditures by candidates who represent their party in public elections.”

In order to support law enforcement agencies, the communique said, “The government must provide law enforcement and investigative bodies with appropriate high-tech crime units that respond to quick investigations.”

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) and the GACC organized the workshop with the goal of strengthening the media’s capacity to effectively counter threats from serious and organized crime (SOC), particularly in the run-up to the December elections.
