English singer-songwriter Ella Mai Howell was born on November 3, 1994. In 2014, she started her musical career at the British and Irish Contemporary Music Institute in London. That same year, she participated in a trio’s audition for The X Factor’s 11th season.

She published a four-track solo EP of original songs called Troubled to SoundCloud in 2015. American record producer Mustard found her on social media and signed her to his label, 10 Summers Records, after hearing her music.

She put out three EPs on the label between 2016 and 2018, including Time, Change, and Ready. The singles “Boo’d Up” and “Trip,” which debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at positions 5 and 11, respectively, were included in her self-titled first studio album, which was released in October 2018.
The song “Boo’d Up” received nominations for two Grammy Awards in 2019—Song of the Year and Best R&B Song, with the latter earning a victory—and Mai herself received a nomination for British Breakthrough Artist at the Brit Awards. She took home three honours from the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, including the top R&B artist prize.
