Electricity VAT: TUC notifies Police on planned demo

The Ghana Police Service has been informed by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of their intention to hold a nationwide protest over the proposed 15% residential energy consumption tax.

Despite Cabinet’s decision to remove the contentious tariff, the union claims they have not received an official communication and will continue with their plans.

A letter to Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was sent by TUC General Secretary Yaw Baah, stating that a demonstration is being organized in each of the 16 areas.

Various Ghanaian groups, civic society, and organized labor have all criticized the power VAT. While the government justifies the fee by saying it helps the COVID-19 rehabilitation program, organized labor calls for its elimination.

People around the country have expressed their displeasure with the disagreement, which has generated concerns. In order to address these issues and come up with a solution that works for everyone, the TUC underlines the importance of having a conversation.

To overcome these obstacles, cooperation and understanding are required.
