The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has extended the deadline for the Limited Voter Registration exercise, which was initially set to conclude on Monday, May 27. The new deadline for the exercise is Wednesday, May 29, according to a statement released by the commission on Friday, May 24.
The decision to extend the deadline was made in response to the challenges experienced during the first two days of the voter registration exercise. The EC aims to accommodate more eligible voters and ensure a smooth and efficient registration process.
The limited voter registration exercise began on Tuesday, May 7, in preparation for the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7. Despite facing initial technical difficulties, the EC reported a significant increase in the number of applicants registered during the exercise.
During a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, May 21, Samuel Tetteh, the Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, emphasized that the Commission had no plans to extend the registration period. Tetteh highlighted that the registration centers had seen fewer people queuing up in the second week, indicating a smoother process.
The EC reiterated its commitment to a transparent and fair registration process and dismissed allegations of secret registration using stolen Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) devices. Election Watch Ghana, the group making the allegations, was challenged by the Commission to provide evidence to support their claims.
The Commission urged political parties, as key stakeholders, to publish their daily registration figures from all authorized registration centers and verify the accuracy of the data provided by the EC. The extension of the limited voter registration exercise aims to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive voter registration process for the upcoming elections.
