American singer, songwriter, and musician Eldra Patrick DeBarge was created on June 4, 1961. El is a Detroit, Michigan resident and the sixth child of Robert Louis DeBarge Sr. and Etterlene DeBarge. Young pianist DeBarge also participated in his local church chorus. After relocating to Grand Rapids, Michigan, he and the rest of his family began singing at their uncle’s Pentecostal church.

The DeBarges was released in 1981 by the DeBarges family after spending a year in the studio. The majority of the songs on the album were written and produced by all four DeBarge family members, including Bobby DeBarge, who worked with El to finish the title track, “Queen of My Heart.”
Due to the song “I Like It” and the album’s name, the following album, All This Love (1982), which included the younger brother James, became extremely well-known. El would keep arranging and producing the group’s Motown songs.
