Edward James Olmos (born February 24, 1947) is an actor, director, producer, and activist from the United States. He is best known for his roles as Lieutenant Martin “Marty” Castillo in Miami Vice (1984-1989), American Me (1992) (for which he also directed), William Adama in the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009).

He also played the role of teacher Jaime Escalante in Stand and Deliver (1988) (for which he received an Academy Award nomination), Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017), and Mito in the 2005 Disney du In the FX series Mayans MC, he played the father of two members of an outlaw motorcycle gang from 2018 until 2023.

Edward is the son of Eleanor (Huizar) and Pedro Olmos, a mail carrier and welder.His father was a Mexican immigrant who moved to California in 1945, and his mother was a Mexican-born American.

His parents divorced when he was seven years old, and he was nurtured mostly by his great-grandparents while his parents were at work. He grew up hoping to be a professional baseball player and joined the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system as a catcher at the age of 13.

He left baseball at the age of 15 to join a rock and roll band, causing a schism with his father, who was offended by the move.
