He was called El Gato The Cat by many South Americans.
He won eight European Tour titles, the latest of which was the Scottish Open in 2002, and two senior majors, including the US Senior Open six years later.
Romero also won over 80 tournaments in South America and represented Argentina in 14 World Cup of Golf competitions, placing second in 2000.
In July 1991, he had a career-high ranking of 19th, and his greatest major finish came at The Open in 1997.
He retired from golf as a result of his deteriorating health.
