Butler was conceived on May 8, 1957. He received his education at Monmouth School and Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge, where from 1976 to 1978 he studied French and Spanish.
Butler, who wore the number eight position, won three seasons with the Cambridge Blues in 1976, 1977, and 1978.
From 1980 to 1984, Butler played in 16 games for Wales’ national team, leading the team in six of those games.
