The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) voiced worry in a recent communiqué on the postponement of the Senegalese presidential elections, which were initially slated for February 25, 2024.

The ECOWAS Commission is urging prompt action to set a new election date in response to concerns highlighted by Senegalese authorities’ decision to postpone the polls.

In a communiqué, the ECOWAS Commission stressed how crucial it is to have credible, inclusive, and transparent elections.

It called for Senegal’s political elite as a whole to cooperate and have conversations in order to guarantee a fair election process. According to ECOWAS, Senegal can preserve its democratic heritage and improve its governance by making these principles a priority.

Recognizing President Macky Sall’s choice to forego a second term, ECOWAS urged him to keep up the defense of Senegal’s democratic principles.

The decision by Senegalese authorities to postpone the country’s scheduled presidential elections for February 25, 2024 has been noted by the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The ECOWAS Commission urges the relevant authorities to expedite the different procedures in order to designate a new date for the elections, expressing concern over the circumstances that have resulted in the postponement of the elections. The Commission also calls on all members of the political elite to place a high priority on communication and cooperation in order to ensure free, fair, and legitimate elections.

The ECOWAS Commission applauds President Macky Sall for sticking to his earlier choice to forego a second term and urges him to keep fighting for Senegal’s venerable democratic heritage. The Commission will continue to be aware of the circumstances.
