The opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Eastern Regional Youth Organizer, Richard Etornam Nyarko, has linked the nation’s economic downturn to the rise in young people’s premature mortality.

According to Nyarko, economic mismanagement has resulted in high unemployment rates, skyrocketing healthcare and medication costs, and challenges paying for healthy diets. As a result, some young people are turning to what is now known as “zero-one-zero,” or eating just once a day.

He underlined that many young people are giving in to pressure because the economic burden they are under has grown intolerable.

Nyarko expressed his concerns, stating, “In recent times, social media is flooded daily with news of deaths of young people. Young people are dying because of economic pressure. Many are unemployed. Some can’t even afford one square meal a day now they do Zero–one–zero. The youth can’t pay rent. Prices of medicines have hit the roof due to inflation. Akufo Addo and Bawumia have collapsed the economy resulting in all these preventable deaths among the youth.”

Following a Unity Walk in the Upper West Anymore constituency, Nyarko spoke to NDC supporters and then made these comments in an interview with Starr News.

The youth were given the assurance that John Dramani Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy will increase employment possibilities and promote economic prosperity by Richard Nyarko, commonly known as Commander Bilibo.

The $48-million Jute plant at Adeiso, the largest jute plant in Africa with a monthly capacity of 600,000 bags, is located on a 12-acre plot of land in the Upper West Akyem District. He accused the government of ignoring the factory. More than 3000 people could be employed by the factory.

In order to save the millions of dollars spent annually on sack imports, Nyarko promised that President John Mahama will see to it that the factory was completed and put into service.

He asked people to back Emmanuel Drah, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, in order to assist the party retake the seat from the NPP.
