GH¢82 million will be invested by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Central Regional Office in its operations to stabilize and grow the region’s power supply.
The money will be used to replace rotten poles, replace 180,000 non-smart and prepaid meters with smart prepaid meters, and provide 200 transformers throughout the region, according to Emmanuel Lumor, the Central Regional General Manager of the ECG, who made this announcement during a media interaction last Monday.
He stated that the smart meters would be set up in Swedru, Kasoa, Winneba, and Cape Coast. Mr. Lumor stated that certain areas would receive energy extension as part of the project.
He added that prepaid meters would take the place of more than 300,000 postpaid meters in the Central Region.
In order to guarantee a steady supply of electricity, he added that ECG would set up switching stations at Twifo Praso and Breman Asikuma to evacuate power to the region from Oda in the Eastern Region as well as from the Western Region in the event of a power outage.
As part of this year’s electioneering campaign, he declared, politicians would not be handing out meters in their communities and the ECG would make sure that power meters were distributed only by the corporation.
