The Electoral Commission (EC) has formally set April 30, 2024 as the date for the Ejisu seat by-election in the Ashanti region. This decision followed the death of Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, a Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Finance Minister, on March 7, 2024.

Dr. Kumah died on March 7, 2024, from a short illness.

The news was delivered at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled a primary for April 13, 2024, with the goal of selecting a candidate from among nine hopefuls.

Nominations were accepted between Tuesday, April 2, 2024, and Thursday, April 4, 2024, with all nine candidates successfully submitting bids before the deadline.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its decision to boycott the poll.

Citing cash and other resources as the reason, the party stated that it is more focused on the December 7 general elections, which are less than 8 months away.
